A city with a rich history
Bilbao is the heart of a metropolis with a population over 1,000,000. Since its foundation, more than 700 years ago, it has been the main economic and social development axis and a crucial factor in the modernisation of the Biscay Bay area.
From Bordeaux to La Coruña, Bilbao’s hegemony is unparalleled. No other city in the area has more reasons to be raised to the status of economic, financial, cultural and tourist capital. Bilbao is a hospitable city, with a lifestyle highly valued by visitors. People from Bilbao are very open and treat tourists kindly, something you can see when you walk around the city.
Bilbao International Airport is located in Loiu, some 10 km away from Vizcaya’s capital city. Its services are in line with any world class airport: it offers more than 400 flights a week, direct connections with the main Spanish cities and European capitals; and it serves around 3 million passengers a year. Today, 12 companies offer their flight services at Bilbao Airport, which ensures you can get to the main European cities in 1 to 3 hour flights, or make connections to other continental or transcontinental airports.
It’s climate is humid marine, with mild temperatures all year round. The average temperatures are 8ºC in winter and 20ºC in summer. Bilbao features mild winters and moderately hot summers, and rains are more frequent in spring and autumn.

Visit Guggenheim Museum
Instantly hailed as the most important structure of its time, Frank Gehry’s Bilbao Guggenheim Museum will celebrate this year its 15th Anniversary of extraordinary success after opening on October 19, 2007. With close to ninety exhibitions and over ten million visitors to its credit, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao changed the way the world thinks about museums forever, and it continues challenging our assumptions about the connections between art, architecture, and collecting.
OOn May 29 the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao opened two truly world-class restaurants: Nerua, a haute cuisine restaurant helmed by award-winning chef Josean Martínez Alija, and the Bistró Guggenheim Bilbao. Nerua is located in the heart of the Museum, and has its own entrance from the river promenade. The less formal Bistró serves three prix-fixe menus of avant-garde café fare, and has an outdoor terrace overlooking the city.
