The capital of Spain, located in the heart of the peninsula and right in the centre of the Castillian plain 646 meters above sea level, has a population of over three million. A cosmopolitan city, a business center, headquarters for the Public Administration, Government, Spanish Parliament and the home of the Spanish Royal Family, Madrid also plays a major role in both the banking and industrial sectors. Most of its industry is located in the Southern fringe of the city, where important textile, food and metal working factories are clustered. Madrid is characterized by intense cultural and artistic activity and a very lively nightlife.
Moving about within the city, you will recognize that although an old Madrid still exists, with its zig-zag disorganized side streets like in any antique quarter in Spain, the newly constructed zones have been laid out according to organized plans for channels that extend throughout the city serving as arteries for the most traffic clogged areas.
The great lungs of Madrid, that enable the city to breathe freely, are la Casa de Campo, the Buen Retiro Park, Parque del Oeste, Juan Carlos I Park and Dehesa de la Villa. Of all, the most popular is the Retiro, whose name comes from its creation was a part of the royal residence.
Madrid has a unique atmosphere due to the combination of itshigh altitude and the mountain breeze. At an altitude of 2,100 feet, this could be Europe’s highest capital. Not only is Madrid the capital of Spain but it is also the world capital of bullfighting. Madrid is alive with bars and cafes and has some of the finest shops in Europe.
Madrid gathers the best cuisine of the whole Spain. Each regional cuisine is represented here. From the mix of all the specialities added to a Madrilenian touch has born a really tasty cuisine.
One of the charms of Madrid is the choice of bars where you can enjoy a drink and some “tapas” (small portion). Madrilenian people are really used to go to bars after working and have some tapas with friends.
Madrid is a really lively city during the day and also by night. There are plenty of nightclubs, terraces opened each day with a great variety of style.
Indispensable accompaniments are red and green mojo (an emulsion of paprika and cumin with chilli, oil and vinegar served with hot fish; green mojo uses fresh coriander leaves) and papas arrugas (wrinkled potatoes are new potatoes boiled in seawater then baked and served with spicy mojo sauce). The local wine made with the grapes of Malavasía is strong, dry and quite excellent.
